Source du Pays launches Zachary Nkwo journalism scholarship

Brewery giant, Source du Pays SA, have announced that the company though its newly created “Zachary Nkwo scholarship” scheme will be awarding fully-funded scholarships to some four journalism students each year beginning from the 2017/2018 academic year. According to the board of directors of the scholarship program organised in memory of late journalism icon and commentary baobab, Zachary Nkwo, four underprivileged students will be sponsored from their first year until graduation by the scholarship scheme.

The juicy scheme which is part of the company’s cooperate social responsibility, it should be noted, is coming barely two months after the burial of Zachary Nkwo, popularly referred to as “uncle Zach”.
Speaking during the presentation of the scholarship program to pressmen on Tuesday 12, September in Buea, the chairman of the scholarship board who equally doubles as the Commercial Manager of Source du Pays S.A, Amo Khater, noted that Zachary Nkwo left a mark in his generation and thus deserves to be honoured.

While recalling the good-old days of Uncle Zach’s ultimate commentaries, Amo Khater observed that the glories brought to the nation because of his commentaries and unique voice continues to leave on even though he is no more. To him, the scholarship aims at creating new generation commentators who can take over from where uncle zachs stopped.

Describing him as a legendary icon and a man of valour worth celebrating, the board chair emphasised that with Zach’s voice, he brought a lot of glories to Cameroon distinguishing the nation in Africa.

On what entails to be eligible for the scholarship which will seeks to fully sponsor two students from the department of Journalism and Mass Communication, JMC of the University of Buea and two others from the Advanced School of Mass Communication, ASMAC, Yaounde, the Secretary of the board, Mabel Yufanyi, started by highlighting that all beneficiaries must be Cameroonians by nationality.

She added that while it will be expected of the scholarship beneficiary to be of very good morals and should never get sanctioned by the university authorities, she announced that a yearly sum of five hundred and fifty thousand FCFA will be made available to each needy student yearly for the payment of their university tuition, rents, books and feeding.

With less than six years of operation, Source du Pays, she added was the sole benefactor and was determined to ensure that the name of Zachary Nkwo and the glories he brought Cameroon as a nation and football lovers in particular, should not forgotten.


Equally present at the ceremony was Professor Julius Ngoh, brother to Zachary Nkwo and adviser to the board, Walter Wilson Nana, Press relation officer and a battery of print and audio-visual journalist. Other members of the board include, senior journalist, Njomo Kevin and Isidore Agah who both occupy the positions of advisers to the board.
