The newly appointed
vice chancellor of the University of Buea, Prof Horace Ngomo Manga, while
officially taking over the baton of command from his predecessor, Dr Nalova
Lyonga Pauline, on July 10 2017, at an event presided by the Minister of Higher
Education, Prof Jacque Fame Ndongo, pledge his total commitment to the values
of academic excellence and righteousness.

During a solemn
ceremony that took place at the Amphitheatre 750 of the University of Buea and
attended by staffers of the institution, the academic don promised to go and
extra mile in ensuring that the university maintains its position as the
leading state University in Cameroon. A think tank capable of being counted
amount Universities in Africa.
The associate professor
of applied chemical engineering, who currently holds a PhD form the University
of Lagos, Nigeria, was appointed by presidential degree no 2017/318 of 27 June
2017. His appointment, this reporter gathered, was received with a lot of
exhilaration from both staffers and students of the institution.
Not because he was seen
as the best candidate to head the institution, but because the University
community could not wait to say goodbye to retired Dr Nalova Lyonga, who had
being Vice chancellor since 2012.
An indigent of Ndian
Division, Horace Ngomo, after serving for over five years as secretary General
at the Ministry of Higher Education upon his appointment showered the education
community with promises of the best and nothing but the best.
But just like many
before him who have constantly failed to deliver what change will Horace be
bringing into the university of Buea? Upon his retirement or possible
relocation, what will he highlight as his legacy and accomplishments?
How different will he
be from his predecessors who never give a listening ear to the plights of UB student’s
but rather preferred to call in armed to the teeth gendarme officer?
Will his staff on a
daily basis fire petitions and financial reports to Yaounde and drop explosive
interviews in the press as regard his managerial style and policies as was the
case with the former VC?
Taking over at a
crucial period when education in the two English speaking regions of Cameroon
is almost epileptic, will Ngomo used his intellectual capacity to handle
students and lectures grievances so as to completely eradicate strike actions or
will he invite “friendly” gendarme officers to do the job for him?
Manning the affairs of
an institution deeply rooted in the Anglo-saxon values constantly threatened by
harmonization by Yaounde officials, Prof Horace is already standing at the
middle of the road, however the question is on which side will he cross to?
An institution in the
early 2000s regarded as the epitome of education which over the years has
produced PhD holders who can barely make a correct sentence in English, is in dire need of a reformist.
Someone to take UB from its despicable ranking and make it a real “place to
be.” Is Prof Horace Ngomo Manga that person? Affaire a suvire…
cool`
