As a prerequisite to ensuring
the socio-economic development of the municipality of Buea thereby fulfilling
his electoral promise of “giving back to the population”, the municipal
landlord of the Buea council, Ekema Patrick Esunge, has in the past months
engaged in a series of diplomatic deliberations all geared at amassing
resources and transferring technologies from more economically developed
nations to Buea. His aim, this reporter gathered, is to transform Buea into an
Eldorado in the shortest possible time.

His drive to ensuring
the complete socio-economic development of Buea last week led him accompanied
by his deputies, close collaborators, traditional authorities and a cross
section of denizens of Buea to pay host to the Charge d’affair and acting
ambassador of the United states to Cameroon, Matthew Smith.
Speaking after holding
an in-camera discussion with the high profile diplomat and his collaborators,
Mayor Ekema Patrick Esunge, started by thanking Matthew Smith, for honouring
his invitation.
After highlighting the
potentials of Buea to grow, (a town he describes as very close to his heart)
and enumerating all the developmental projects his mandate has instituted with
what they have in the pipeline for the municipality, it was an all ecstatic
Ekema Patrick Esunge, who on behalf of his councillors and traditional
authorities, handed over the Buea
Memorandum to the US diplomat.
According to the Buea
memorandum, the municipal head who said he was conveying a message from his
people called on the high-strata diplomat to put in place opportunities for council
representatives in Buea to be able to travel to the United States for training
programs to boast their technical know-how and facilitate the transfer of
technology back to Buea.
According to the
memorandum which the Mayor read out before handing it over to the US
delegation, it was practically impossible for the council to accompany the
government in accomplishing its emergence vision with the little technical
knowledge especially as they were gradually becoming engage in all levels of
development.
To Mayor Ekema, with
the recent institution of decentralisation, municipal authorities have a major
rule to play as regard the socio-economic development of their area and they
can only be effective after taking part in such training symposiums from more
advanced nations.
The strongly-worded
memorandum written explicitly in the queen’s-language equally urged the US
acting ambassador to assist the Buea council in partnering some US-based
institutions which can help the municipality of Buea to witness an economic
leap in the nearest future.
Mayor Ekema equally
took out time to highlight some of the developmental project he has in mind for
denizens of the Buea council but could not completely execute them due to
financial restrictions. They include; the construction of a well-equipped and
ultra-modern market, a cable cab to ferry tourist to the majestic Mount Fako,
the supply of medical assistance to hospitals, electrification of rural communities,
and some basic yet scares societal amenities to the population of Buea.
Responding to his
demands, the leader of the US delegation to the Buea council who is the acting
ambassador, Matthew Smith, first took out time to congratulate the population
of Buea and under the stewardship of Buea council for the rapid development of
the town which is parallel to none. To him he has visited Buea two times and
coming for the third time in 2017, the developmental changes was prove on the
towns readiness to develop.
Mattew Smith while
recalling the good bi-lateral relationship enjoyed between the United States of
America and Cameroon, made known his intensions and that of his nation to
assist Cameroon in every way they can. To him, they are always ready to assist
and will never stop to do so.
Here him “all you need
to do is tell us if there is something we can do to help and we will gladly do
so…we are working closely with the government of Cameroon in many domains and
will continue to do so.”
Matthew Smith equally
noted that all the demands of the population of Buea put forth by their Mayor
had been taken in to consideration and will he processes within the shortest
possible time.
Equally present at last
week’s high diplomatic meeting was the Chief Executive Officer, CEO of ACMAR
media group, business operators and representatives of syndicates in Buea.
