The International Centre for
Environmental Education and Community Development, ICENECDEV, which has as
mission “Empowering People to Protect the Environment” has launched a war
against desertification in Cameroon. All this, the nongovernmental organization
holds, is to ensure the sustainability of Cameroon’s forest reserves while combatting
climate change, a 21st century major challenge.

Speaking to this reporter
this week in Buea upon his return from the 13th Session of the
Conference of Parties (COP13) to the United Nations Convention to Combat
Desertification (UNCCD), the chief executive officer of Buea-based
non-for-profit organization, ICENECDEV, Fongoh Eric, explained that the
unscrupulous cutting down of trees without any attempts to replant them could
be far more costly and catastrophic that what meets the eye.
To
him, his organization whose main aim centers around protecting the environment,
has after strategizing, adopted several measures to combat desertification in
all ten regions that make up Cameroon.
ICENECDEV participation at the
COP13 in China
The
International Centre for Environmental Education and Community Development,
INCENECDEV, staged a memorable participation at the 13th Session of
the Conference of Parties (COP13) of the United Nations Convention to Combat
Desertification (UNCCD). The ceremony which took place in Ordos, China, ran
from September 6 to the 16, 2017.
After
participating in the youth Forum and civil society organization forum, Fongoh
Eric, who represented ICENECDEV, noted that it was high time stakeholders the
world over have a rethink and stand as one to fight desertification.

The
conference ended with the adoption of the voluntary guidelines on
responsible governance of land tenure , Fisheries, and Forest in the context of National
Food Security, embracing land governance approach in the future strategic
framework of the UNCCD. A national action plan on land degradation neutrality
targeted towards an effective sustainable implementation of the UNCCD was
equally highlighted.
The
inclusion of civil society organizations in the implementation of the strategic
framework of Land Degradation Neutrality, LDN, to meet targets at country’s
levels and also to ensure access to funds for local actors and small scale
project on sustainable land management
There
was equally an adoption of the youth declaration which aims at including youths
in the strategic framework and the consolidation of scientific knowledge on the
state of lands in countries and local territories.
