True to its
objective of constantly giving back to the population and ensuring its
socio-economic wellbeing, the Buea Council under the stewardship of its
municipal Shepard, Mayor Ekema Patrick Esunge, in partnership with the Global
Forum for the Defense of the less Privilege, GFDLP, have embarked on a
sensitization campaign throughout the municipality of Buea, South West Regional
capital. Their aim, to sensitize denizens especially those in the rural areas
on access to justice and legal aid as a fundamental human right.

Their drive to
completely sensitize all denizens of the municipality last weekend took the
Council delegation and the Buea-based nongovernmental organization GFDLP to
Bonakanda, one of the largest villages in Buea Sub Division.
Speaking, the
Executive Director of the Global Forum for the Defence of the Less Privilege,
GFDLP, Akoh Baudouin Ngah, stated that their modus operandi is to make
accessible justice for all. While emphasizing that the old days when legal
representation remained a luxury is long gone, Akoh Baudouin Ngah pointed out
that many at times the poor and less influential just get to sit and watch the
rich deprive them of their lands and right to justice. An act which he says
henceforth remains history.
Addressing the
populations of Bova I and II, Woteva and Bonakanda who turned out that chief
palace for the mass sensitization campaign, the executive director took out
time to explain to denizens of the localities that access to justice remained a
fundamental right and not a luxury. Buttressing his point, he pointed out that
with the legal aid scheme put forth by the government access to justice was now
available to all without and distinctions.
Much earlier in
his welcome address, the delegation to Bonakanda, Chief Ndongo Emmanuel
Molonge, traditional custodian of Bonakanda village took out time to expressed
the heartfelt condolence of his villagers towards the current Buea Council
management which according to him always to beyond their comfort zones to
provide the much needed assistance to denizens resided both a the urban and
interior parts of Buea.
Chief Ndongo who
turned rather very stern, noted in dismay that his villagers are constantly
manipulated and cheated because of their ignorance of the law. To him, such
sensitizations platforms should be held regularly so as to enlighten the
indigenes of the locality who many at times have fallen victim to
misrepresentation due to their ignorance.
Mounting the
rostrum to address the crowd that turnout at the chiefs’ palace, Barrister
Marbel Nnoko Nnana, who centered her discuss on “legal aid practicalities and its
benefits” announced that with the government had made it possible for the less
privilege, orphans and financially deprived to get full representation
pro-bono. This, the Tiko based specialist on human rights said had been made
possible thanks to the legal.
Speaking, the
personal representative of the Mayor of the Buea Council, Ewome Njie Joseph,
Secretary General at the Buea Cuncil, reiterated the council’s commitment to
fostering the welfare of its population. In the words of his hierarchy, the Secretary
General noted that access to fair justice was equally the council’s prime
concern, reason for its partnering with GFDLP.
