The much preached dialogue
the international community, political leaders, civil society actors and heads
of international bodies such as the United Nations and Commonwealth have been
clamouring for, urging the government of Cameroon to engage in with separatist
as an antidote to the lingering Anglophone crisis might be a little
far-fetched.
This is backed by the
reason that for weeks now, both sides have drifted away from the dialogue
table, focusing on reinforcing their might, adopting new strategies to combat
one another and giving a near deaf ear to calls for a round table platform.
As the crisis linger and
eat deep entering a new stage with each passing day, the possibility of
engaging in dialogue seems to drift further away.
Before now, both parties
have on several occasion expressed desires and wiliness to dialogue with the
head of state, Paul Biya re-echoing the importance of dialogue on more than one
occasion during his rare media appearances.
However angered by the
sporadic killing of security officers in restive North West and South West
regions, President Paul Biya upon his return from Abidjan, Ivory Coast where he
attended the 5th Au-Eu summit changed his stand on the issue.
He stated categorically
and without mixing words at the Nsimalen airport upon his arrival in Cameroon
that all necessary security dispensations will be taken against the terrorist
whom he said masked as secessionist to destabilize Cameroon.
His statement was
interpreted by many media outlets as a declaration of war on the separatist
movement. In respond, the separatist redoubled their attacks on security
elements. Recently they seem to have adopted a new strategy, that of abducting
government officials.
In less than one month,
two officials namely; the divisional officer for Batibo, Namata Ditend and the
North West regional Delegate for social affair, Animbom Aaron Akiabom have been
abducted and taken to unknown destinations. With foiled attempts made on many
government officials.
This week, the government
in what has been seen as a measure to repress and reinforce and suppress any
security threats established a fifth military region in Bamenda. A new regiment
of Gendarmerie combatant according to the state broadcaster, are to make their
way to the North West any of these days.
With dialogue gradually
shifting from the lips of both parties and the human casualties on both sides
on the rise, what is today tagged the “Anglophone crisis” might generate into a
civil war as predicted by SDF flag bearer, Joshua Osih should nothing be done
and fast.
